Mark Grosskopf, Lessons from a Tech CEO on Launching Startups, – Episode 26

Mark Groskopf, is a proven entrepreneur and the CEO of New Resources Consulting and Westin Technology Solutions.  Mark believes that every company can be strengthened through technology and his companies are designed to provide and implement the technology that will provide that strength.

Mark is the youngest of 7 kids.  After his Dad was killed in an accident when Mark was only 5, his Mom raised he and his six siblings alone in a loving, but poor family.  From an early age, Mark liked to run things.  He developed a drive to have control and for financial security that he satisfied by working, first as a paper boy and later at fast food places like Pizza Hut and McDonalds before beginning his career with Super America, the gas station and convenience store chain.  Along the way, influenced by his brother Rick, he also became a self-described “computer geek”

The traditional schooling path was not for Mark and when an opportunity to help Super America roll out into the Florida market came along, Mark left college and headed to Bonita Springs, where he experienced tremendous success with the company.  A series of subsequent events and fortunate introductions, accompanied by Mark’s own drive for new challenges led him into the nascent, but ready to take off, video rental business and finally to New Resources, where he became the sole owner in 2001.

Mike and Mark cover a ton of great stuff in this episode, for example what it’s like to experience hockey stick growth – followed by a recession that caused his firm to shrink by 550 employees; what its liked to be promised ownership, and then not get it, why leaving cash in the business helps him sleep at night and how Andy Grove’s book “Only The Paranoid Survive” made an indelible mark on his thinking.
