What does it take to be an entrepreneur? If you are searching for skills, talent, and abilities to be an entrepreneur, you are one step closer to being an entrepreneur than you were yesterday. When you search the internet, you’ll read many blog posts that tell you vision, team building, courage, and start-up investments from venture capital are key attributes to becoming an entrepreneur and successful business owner. Even the terms failure and fail fast have become popular buzzwords in the startup and entrepreneur handbooks. But what happens when your business starts to take off? What skills do you need to have when you actually start selling products or services, and start getting clients?
The big fear that hits many entrepreneurs after they start achieving some success is backwards momentum. Major setbacks will happen as your business starts growing. In some aspects, the easiest part is starting the business and calling yourself an entrepreneur. The hard part to continue as an entrepreneur comes from the resilience of pushing forward.
There will be major setbacks and problems that you can’t possibly imagine that will make starting a business seem not worth it at all. Just like an excruciating workout where your burning muscles are telling your brain to stop – problems will happen growing your business that make you want to stop. But to cross the threshold from entrepreneur to business owner you have to keep going, and be creative and forthright in overcoming these obstacles.
Maybe you’ll have culture issues that lead to employee turnover problems. Maybe you’ll have customer service problems that ruin your relationships with top customers. Or maybe you’ll get exhausted dealing with daily chaos instead of adopting a system. Eventually you might find yourself looking for all the things that could go wrong because you just need a break for things to go right.
“If you are looking at all the things that could go wrong, I don’t think you would ever be an entrepreneur” – Scott Welsh, my guest on the How’d It Happen Podcast Episode 99.5 – Listen Now.
When Scott Welsh was on my How’d It Happen Podcast, he had many inspiring comments for entrepreneurs and future business owners. The above comment really stuck with me, because I’ve started businesses and dealt with many setbacks and problems. In the end, I learned methods to get unstuck, push through the setbacks, and continue to grow the business – all while alleviating most of my stress.
The good news is there are solutions to the problems and setbacks that cause entrepreneurs to get stuck and frustrated. And I’m on a mission to help entrepreneurs get unstuck, take back their power, achieve their life objectives, and create the futures they want.
I love supporting and helping entrepreneurs bring their dreams to fruition, break through barriers, and achieve massive success.
As an entrepreneur myself, I’ve helped found, grow, and sell 2 waste treatment, recycling, and disposal companies. These companies collectively generated more than $500M in revenue while I was involved and sold for more than $180M.
I’ve lived in entrepreneurial shoes like yours since I was 26. For 30 years I’ve been through – and am still on – the roller coaster you’re on. I’ve experienced the excitement, pain, grit, and mistakes that come with every entrepreneurial journey.
You can learn about many of the problems I dealt with starting my companies, and how I overcame them in my book “Owner Shift – How Getting Selfish Got Me Unstuck” available on Amazon. Purchase my book Owner Shift, make notes along the way in the book, and reread all the stories that inspire you to become an entrepreneur. I want this book to inspire you on your entrepreneurial journey to get unstuck, and achieve the future you always imagined.

I do it to make a difference.
I’m very selective about my OwnerShift coaching relationships. I ONLY work with these kinds of clients:
- Entrepreneurs and CEOs of profitable, privately held companies leading companies with revenues between $10M and $250M.
- Leaders who are committed to moving beyond where they are professionally and personally AND have the autonomy to make the decisions and take the actions necessary to do so.
- People who value making significant investments in themselves.
- Kind people.
