Dr. Hoby Wedler is an entrepreneurial visionary focused on creating companies that explore the sensory experiences. Hoby is unusually tuned into his surroundings, approaches the world with the heart of teacher, and makes a map in his mind for any adventure he pursues, whether that is smelling the aromas of wine, biting into and tasting a fuji apple, walking through the city, or focusing his mind without overwhelming visual distractions because Hoby has been completely blind since birth.
Hoby earned his PhD from UC David in organic chemistry. He’s a scientist, food and beverage expert and a passionate explorer. In 2011, his passion for senses lead him to create Accessible Science, a non-profit organization which leads annual chemistry camps for blind or visually impaired students throughout North America. In the same year he began opening doors to the world of wine aromas by holding truly blind wine tastings in Francis Ford Coppola’s wineries.
Hoby is a motivational speaker, a mentor, and educator. He’s going full speed with the global marketing agency he co-founded, Senspoint, which is focused on brand development and multi sensory experiences which helps brands reimagine their messages.
Mike and Hoby cover a ton of great stuff in this episode like how his parents vocalized their actions during his childhood, to help him map their motion in his mind, his love for organic chemistry because it was cerebral and based on perspective and scale and not sight, where his passion for teaching came from, his love for taking on challenges, theories on important life learnings, and what propelled him to go from being a PhD to a successful entrepreneur, and why he wants to help us on our path to sensory literacy.
