Dr.Tom Deans is an Entrepreneur and the author of “Every Family’s Business: 12 Common Sense Questions to Protect Your Wealth”, a book that has sold more than a million copies in more than 100 countries and been selected by the New York Times as one of the top ten books that business owners should read. Tom is also the Founder and CEO of Détente Financial Press, a professional public speaker represented by Speakers Spotlight, and a recipient of TEC Canada’s Speaker of the Year Award. He’s been featured in numerous magazines and publications including Profit, Money Sense and the Wall Street Journal and is a frequent guest on CNBC, Money Line and BNN. Finally, Dr. Deans is the Founder of Willing Wisdom Index, a client engagement tool used by estate planning professionals around the world.
After selling his family business for more than $100M, Tom took about two weeks off before deciding that he wanted to share his passion for successful family business succession planning. He believes that the number one purpose of a family business is to create wealth. The combination of this passion and belief manifests itself in the story, and the 12 questions that became his “every Family’s Business” book. His admittedly contrarian view about this difficult subject differentiated Tom and resulted in him developing his highly successful publishing and speaking business, which he talks about at great length.
Mike and Tom cover a ton of great stuff in this episode, including why family businesses can be so tricky to run, how he sees the relinquishing of control voluntarily as a sign of wisdom, his belief that cash equals freedom – and is easy to divide – and why there is no business like writing books. Tom is an exceptionally smart, pragmatic and successful expert. He challenges you to think objectively. Be prepared to learn a lot.
And now here’s Dr. Tom Deans.
