Josh Jeffers is the Founder and CEO of J Jeffers & Co., a Milwaukee based diversified commercial real estate development company. Since moving to Milwaukee in 2012, Josh has become a national influencer in the re-development of historic buildings, many of which had been nearly given up on by other developers.
Josh grew up in the Waukegan IL area and graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison with a degree in finance. He joined a Chicago based private equity firm focused on Real Estate internationally and, after a few years there, became a victim of a workforce reduction caused by the Great Recession. Deciding that it would be a good opportunity to re-invent himself, Josh decided to get his Masters in Public Policy from Harvard University, thinking he might have a future in government policy development. But before he graduated, he was presented with a development opportunity in Milwaukee that he just couldn’t give up, flying back and forth to secure and manage the project while he earned his degree.
Mike and Josh cover a ton of great stuff in this episode, including how he’s grown from being a spread sheet guy to a re-development visionary, how he risked everything he had (and more) on his first project, how his company has grown over the last 7 years from just him to a group of 12 professionals while the value of their projects has ballooned from $3M to $100M, and is about to more than double that with the start of several new projects in the next 6 months.
