Scott Welsh, CEO, Constructing Dramatic Growth in Commercial Real Estate – Episode 68

Scott Welsh is the CEO of Inland Companies. Inland is a global partner with Colliers International and one of Wisconsin’s largest commercial real estate brokers. Scott purchased the business from his father in 1996 when he returned to Milwaukee after cutting his teeth as a commercial real estate broker in Minneapolis. The business has grown dramatically under Scott’s leadership and is now also active in Property Management, Construction and Real Estate Development. He’s significantly involved in the community, is a Board Member of the Downtown Business Improvement District and the occasional host of the MKE Forward podcast, which is worth checking out.

Scott describes himself as having not had much vision in college, although his father had instilled in him a strong work ethic, and an entrepreneurial curiosity at a young age, dangling carrots of work and opportunity at him that led to Scott starting a landscape business. Upon graduating the University of Wisconsin –Whitewater, he and a buddy packed their supplies and an interview suit into a VW and began a three-month tour around the country looking for a job where he could have a lot of fun and make a lot of money. He talks about that adventure and the bummer of having his Grateful Dead tapes stolen long the way.

Mike and Scott cover a ton of great stuff in this episode, including how beneficial his business partnership with Mike Fardy, whom he’s known since high school, has been, why he thrives on overcoming obstacles, how he’s managed the growth of Inland from a company with less than 10 employees to one that now has more than 200 and how he’s preparing the company for the future with the development of his next generation team.

And now here’s Scott Welsh.
