Sheldon Thompson is a sales executive with Halder Inc. a German based maker of high quality, precision tools. He began his career in turf management before shifting his focus to sales, starting in the automobile industry and later moving to packaging equipment, packaging supplies, fulfillment, labels and tools. Along the way, he learned that sales is not about bothering people or just selling what he has to offer. It’s about providing information that people want and need to improve their lives or solve a problem. He shares his enlightened thinking, like that sometimes the best thing he can do for a customer and his company is to say no.
Sheldon is an Iowa kid who made his way to Wisconsin chasing a career, and his soon to be wife, Kristi. He and Mike met on the football field and thankfully for Mike, they met as coaches and not opposing players. A quick peek at the episode photo of the two side by side should make the reason for that clear.
In this wide-ranging conversation and two part episode, Sheldon talks about how he felt when a genetic neck issue derailed his high school football career path which, to that point, was the only life path he thought he needed. How it took him years of searching to figure out what was next. He also talks about his approach to be the best sales professional he can be and how he can shift industries because what’s important isn’t the industry, it’s selling something he believes in.
